May - June 2008
Hosted by the National Commission for Nomadic Education Kaduna. Two delegations of educationists from Ethiopia. The first delegation came to Nigeria 31.05.08-06.06.08 to learn about, and give feedback on, the Nigerian model of nomadic primary schools for graziers and fisherfolk including the children of migratory groups.
The Ethiopians visited two REIWA-NCNE basic computing and interactive e-learning centres at Wurro Nyako Nomadic Primary School, Ladduga, Kachia Grazing Reserve, Zangon Kataf LGA, Kaduna State and at Paikon Kore NPS, Paikon Kore Grazing Reserve, Gwagwalada LGA, FCT.
At Wurro Nyako children gave an inspired display of what they had achieved in only 7 sessions with REIWA’s e-instructor Ameen Sa’ad. The visitors were so happy to see what the children had learn’t and how much their self-confidence and articulateness in English had been boosted.

The second Ethiopian delegation came in June. They too observed the children at work (Wurro Nyako) as well as the Interactive Radio Instruction Unit, set up and funded by the NCNE, the human and animal health posts. They also met the elders, the District Head and other traditional dignatories.
REIWA’s Project Director Dr Caroline Ifeka and colleagues gave a power point presentation to the Ethiopian delegation at the NCNE’s training centre, Km 26, the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway. The presentation gave a bird’s eye view with pictures of the NGO’s work on e-learning, with lessons learned and challenges as well as achievements for discussion and exchange of ideas with the Ethiopian delegation.
July 2008
Sad News
On July 3rd, in the afternoon, a long term REIWA staff, Mall Iliyasu Nyako together with the Chief Imam of the Obudu Central Mosque, Cross River state, were riding on the project machine inside urban Obudu. They were killed by a 4 wheel drive vehicle driven with great carelessness which drove into the back of Iliasu’s machine, ramming it into a tree. Both men were young to middle-aged, at the height of their powers, and their contributions to REIWA and our e-learners will be very greatly missed.
Each man leaves behind a widow, children and other dependants.

In mid-July the PD, Accountant and driver traveled by car to Obudu to visit the bereaved, have legal discussions, and with our field supervisor and literacy instructor, Mrs Maria Abanyam, wrap up the end of the year literacy tests for over 100 Hausa-Fulani women learners in the Old Mosque. All our learners did well, some very well indeed. REIWA is truly proud of our learners’ achievements since they started literacy (4 levels of ability) with Maria in early 2008.

A group of 13 women learners started basic computing in June 2008, prior to making their first visit to the local cyber café. We hope they will do well on the Internet, so they can select information useful to their small business enterprises for improved income generation.
We appointed a new part time instructor Stephen Ebai, who will start work in early October after Sallah is celebrated at the end of Ramadan. Stephen teaches computing to blind people at St Joseph’s School for People with Special Needs, Obudu.

The PD also visited our projects in Katsina and Bauchi for monitoring, evaluation and interactive sessions with community groups, government and other stakeholders (e.g. local youth currently enrolled in our computer repair and maintenance classes.) We identified, with a partner NGO, Service for Humanity Foundation, women suffering from VVF in need of assistance and capacity development.

August 2008
The PD and her always careful driver Emmanuel Bature (‘Babos’) visited his home village, Rahol Mazat, Barakin Ladi LGA, Plateau State. The PD wanted to learn more about women’s farming difficulties, soil degradation, potential for small fish ponds on land close to several old tin mines filled with fresh water, and women’s organizational strength. This was with a view to capacity building for improved more sustainable cultivation integrated with fish ponds and backed by micro-credit.

At the end of August the PD flew to Lagos for REIWA’s sister NGO, the African Research Association (managing Development in Nigeria based in Cross River State) Board of Directors Meeting.
Update - EXAMS!
E-Learning and Literacy Tests. REIWA staff carried out standardized tests of all our learners at Paikon Kore (FCT), Ladduga (Kaduna state), Bakori (Katsina state), Dass (Bauchi state), and Obudu (Cross River state).
We examined a total of 110 basic computing and e-learning children, teachers, youth and women. 96 passed.
We enrolled over 100 Hausa and Fulani women, Obudu, in basic, post-basic and advanced (Primary 4-6 level) literacy. We examined 56, of whom 50 passed.
We are very proud of our learners and of course our staff, who worked very hard to develop standardized exam papers along with a standardized system of marking so all papers are comparable across 5 sites in 5 states. Well done all.
On Coming Events
Some project sites are discussing holding a mini-agricultural and livestock show for a day outside e-learning centres. These shows may hold in early 2009.
We in Kaduna are thinking of having an open day at our office with film show and other visuals to introduce our work to the Kaduna community.
